Ben’s Story

Meet 12-year-old Ben!

He has a great variety of interests including Manchester United, Marvel, DC Comics, gaming with friends, films and more recently baking and music.

Ben was born poorly and as time as progressed, he and his family have learned to live with his chronic illnesses. He suffers from a number of medical issues including asthma, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, joint hypermobility syndrome, bone age delay and food and environmental allergies. He has to endure daily treatment and physiotherapy to manage these conditions. Ben has recently finished a three-year immunotherapy treatment that will hopefully ensure that his environmental allergies have a much lesser impact, especially with his asthma which is unpredictable and an attack can happen at any time without warning.

Knowing of his love for Manchester United, Kevin Maynard at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity nominated Ben to attend our Box4Kids event at Old Trafford in December last year.

It was through Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity that Ben’s mum Andrea first heard about the Trust and Box4Kids. ‘We were told by the hospital about the amazing things Barrie does for the children – such an amazing and generous man’, she says. ‘The kindness and generosity of strangers makes a huge difference to children like Ben who spend a lot of time attending hospital appointments, undergoing tests etc. It is a special time which helps children forget and look forward to an amazing experience with lasting memories.’

Ben’s VIP Experience

On Wednesday 18th December 2019, Ben and Andrea were invited to Old Trafford to watch the Carabao Cup match between Manchester United and Colchester United. They enjoyed the match from the comfort and luxury of an executive box which included lots of special extras.

‘Ben loved everything about the event’, says Andrea. ‘He met some lovely families and other children, a great host (Louise) and a very generous business who made Ben feel really special.  He enjoyed a three-course dinner where safe food had been prepared for him in advance as he has food allergies. A magician came to entertain and Fred the Red popped by to say hi. The match was unbelievable, a great view, lots of singing and lots of goals his team won!  It was truly amazing and something that he wouldn’t have experienced without Box4Kids.’

This box was very kindly donated by NC Associates and Wayne, the Managing Director, came along to host the box. It was great for him to see Box4Kids in action and appreciate just how much these experiences mean to the children.

Talking about how this Box4Kids event has helped Ben, Andrea said, ‘he has been really poorly since September last year and had just started secondary school.  He was in and out of hospital trying new medications and had missed a great deal of school.  This event gave him something to focus on which was a great distraction.  A once in a lifetime opportunity to see his favourite team in an executive box, it was an amazing experience and met some wonderful people.’

We are really grateful to NC Associates and all our box donators, who help us to create these highly important and memorable experiences for such deserving children. If you have an executive box and would like to donate it to our Box4Kids initiative, then please get in touch.
