Meet 14-year-old Macauley!
Alongside enjoying spending time in the company of his three French Bulldogs, Macauley is an absolutely huge Manchester City FC fan. This is something nurses at the Christie Hospital discovered when he began proton beam radiotherapy with them back in 2021. He was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, when a tumour was found in his neck which subsequently spread to his lungs.
Macauley had never had the opportunity to visit the Etihad stadium and see his favourite team in action when he was nominated to attend one of our Box4Kids events. Due to the generosity of Man City and one of our box donors, Macauley was able to meet many players during his visits with us. Not only this, but he has also received signed shirts with personal messages from Jack Grealish. During one of Macauley’s visits through our Box4Kids initiative, Jack Grealish actually came to the box to sit with Macauley and watch some of the match, something Macauley will never forget.
When we asked Macauley and his mum, Kerry, how attending Box4Kids events have helped them as a family, Macauley said, “Barrie Wells gave me something good to think about and look forward to whilst I was going through treatment. The Trust enabled me to create treasured memories with my family, and the chance to experience the hospitality of private boxes.”
Kerry mentioned being able to meet our Chairman Barrie personally, after they were invited to join him watching the Man City v Newcastle game. She referred to Barrie as a “beacon of light during this journey” and that they as a family “cannot thank him enough for all the photos, videos and memories we will cherish forever”. We are delighted to share that Macauley is now cancer free, and the family is looking forward to a very well-deserved trip away together to Disneyland to celebrate his third post-treatment scans being clear.
It is due to the generosity of box donors that we can help create such special memories for deserving children like Macauley. Not only does being in an executive box provide children with a VIP experience, but it is also a safe and secure environment for children unable to watch events from standard seating. If you have an executive box and would like to donate it to our Box4Kids initiative, please do get in touch.
