June’s event of the month was a sports afternoon at Newmarket’s July Course where six poorly children and guests experienced the full VIP hospitality of one of Britain’s leading racecourses.

Expertly taken care of by the staff, the guests enjoyed a day of racing with access to the centre of the parade ring, tipster and a surprise visit by former jump jockey Bob Champion.

The children were all invited from new additions to the ever expanding network of hospitals, hospices and charities nominating deserving children for Box4Kids events: KEECH hospice, EACH hospice and Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

Charlie, 16, has Retts Syndrome and attended the event with her mum and her dad, who is a big horse racing fan. Horse therapy is one of the highlights of her week so she was over the moon in anticipation of a day at the races.

Laura, Charlie’s mum, said “A huge thank you for a really wonderful and truly memorable day. My daughter has had a real love of horses recently and she thoroughly enjoyed her day out at Newmarket.

Being allowed to go in the parade ring was the highlight for my daughter and my husband! Being closer to the horses for her was wonderful, listening to them walking round and the noises they made and then watching as the jockeys walked in, she loved it and didn’t stop smiling!! I cannot thank you enough for the fabulous day out and helping us make another wonderful memory with our daughter.

The day was memorable not only for the children but also for their parents. Neville and Mary, Box4Kids hosts for the day, said “We could see what a positive effect a day like this has for carers. They were meeting new people who really understood their situations and it was good to see how they chatted and mixed over the afternoon. Everyone was terribly appreciative of being asked along and said it had given them a great day out.

With huge thanks to the Jockey Club and the staff at Newmarket Racecourse for helping us making memories of a special day out for poorly children and their parents.
