Tom’s Story

Meet 14-year-old Tom!

He loves all sports and played a lot before his diagnosis. In November 2018 Tom was diagnosed with a brain tumour. It came as a real shock as he had not had any particular symptoms. He had actually attended hospital for a CT scan to investigate a headache linked to a rugby concussion. It was from this that the tumour was discovered.

He has had to endure a huge amount of treatment since then, including five surgeries, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Tom’s CLIC Sargent social worker, Tamsin, nominated Tom to attend our Box4Kids event at Leicester Tigers in December last year. Despite currently not being able to play rugby, it was a great alternative to not only watch a match but do it in VIP style.

Tom’s VIP Experience

On Saturday 7th December 2019, Tom and his mum Karen were invited to Welford Road Stadium to watch the European Challenge Cup match between Leicester Tigers and Calvisano from the comfort and luxury of an executive box.

They enjoyed a meal and refreshments in the box before watching the match from the private balcony. They were also visited by a couple of Tigers players who chatted with guests and of course posed for those all-important photos.

‘It was really good to watch the game from the box instead of in the stands like everyone else’, said Tom. ‘Obviously it was good to see Tigers win too!’

It was a fantastic win for Leicester Tigers who thumped their opposition 59-7. Tom, Karen and all our Box4Kids guests were certainly treated to an action-packed match!

Tom recalls, ‘the hosts Tony and Marlene were lovely – really welcoming and kind. They told us all about the charity, who Barrie Wells is and why he set up the charity.’ All the hosts at our Box4Kids events are close friends or family of Barrie. They volunteer to host at events up and down the UK and are a great extension to the Barrie Wells Trust family.

Commenting on how the Box4Kids event as helped him, Tom said, ‘it gave me some confidence. I’ve been through so much lately it was nice to be treated in a special way.’

We are hugely grateful to Leicester Tigers who donated this event. Box4Kids has been lucky enough to attend matches at the stadium for many years and the club are always so supportive and go the extra mile for our guests.

If you have an executive box and would like to come on board with Box4Kids then please do get in touch. That way we can provide even more special and important experiences for deserving children like Tom.
